TORONTO (AP) – The parents of a former Norwich hockey captain, who died from injuries in an attack outside a Toronto bar, have donated their slain son’s organs.

In a statement released Wednesday, Michael Serba’s family said the organ donations would allow their son’s legacy to live on through others. Serba, a graduate student at Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., died Tuesday. The 25-year-old Serba had been on life support after being struck in the head with an unknown object, possibly a brick, early Saturday after he left a bar.

Nicholas Crowdis, 22, of Toronto, was arrested early Saturday, police said. His next court appearance is Dec. 4.

“Out of this tragedy we are comforted that Michael’s great many qualities of strength, determination, compassion and goodness continue to shine through beyond his life,” Serba’s family said in the statement.

Serba played four successful seasons with the Norwich Cadets. The business major had been attending graduate school and was expected to finish in the spring.

Serba had been with friends at the bar and left at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday to use a cash machine, police said. He returned and told friends a man “sucker-punched” him on the street. Serba and his friends went looking for the man, and Serba found him near the bar and was struck in the head, police said.

Norwich rallied past Plattsburgh State 4-2 Saturday in the championship game of the Primeline Great Northern Shootout tournament. In the traditional victory lap around the ice, some players held the trophy aloft, while others raised Serba’s No. 20 jersey.

An autopsy is scheduled in Toronto.
